Wine Cost per bottle Description
SPARKLING
1 - NV Champagne Brut: Veuve Pelletier & Fils £17.00 This really is very good value Champagne! Classic mix of chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, good bottle age, soft clean and smooth on the palate with small bubbles, it tastes considerably better than its price tag suggests.
WHITE WINE
2 - NV Lancers Rose £5.75 Delicous light, slightly sparkling rose from Portugal found when I was out there a couple of years ago. Only 10.00% alcohol so very easy to drink lots of it! Plenty of fruit, fresh, clean and very refreshing. Ideal for lunch time drinking!
3 - 2006 Sauvignon Domaine Orpin: Vins de Pays d'Oc £6.75 Fresh fruity sauvignon blanc from Southern France, similar to a Sancerre in style - wonderful Summer wine.
4 - 2006 Muscadet de Sevre et Maine, J Aulanier Chateau de L'Osieliniere mise sur lis £7.75 Matured on its lees giving it a creamier taste and texture but without the heaviness often associated with new world wines. The result is a dry, fresh but complex wine - delicious as an aperitif or with food.
5 - Winding road Chardonnay: Nugan Estate South Eastern Australia £8.00 Well made Australian chardonnay, rich but delicate, with a lingering after-taste, and although drinking deliciously now, it is a wine worth cellaring for a year or so if you can manage to hang on to it!
6 - 2005 Koura Bay Sauvignon blanc, Marlborough: New Zealand £11.00 A stylish, fresh sauvignon blanc from New Zealand with tremendous concentration and layers of flavour. Fabulous nose of lychees, soft and rounded on the palate, with an almost smokey sauvignon flavour; who needs Cloudy Bay when you can drink this at half the price!
7 - 2005 Chablis Domaine Moreau Naudet £12.00 A touch of oak in this chardonnay which does not detract from the classic chalky flinty flavours of the Chablis area. Drink now.
8 - 2003 Bourgogne: Domaine Tollot Beaut et Fils £15.75 Stylish, beautifully made chardonnay, with a rich, buttery flavour, but fine too. Tollot Beaut produce one of the best and most sort after Corton Charlemagne, and the UK allocation for this Bourgogne is abut 50 cases - Drink now to 2010.
RED WINE
9 - 2003 Cuvee Reservee Domaine St Martin de la Garrigue £8.00 Fabulous smokey rich 'claret-like' red from the Minervois in southern France, velvety texture, but gutsy and loaded with fruit. Serious top rating.
10 - 2000 Baron de Ley Reserva: Rioja Spain (magnums only) £20.00
magnum
Aged for one year in French oak casks and for a further two years in the bottle, this Rioja is rich, soft and concentrated and full of flavour. It already has the characteristic softness on the palate, but will comfortably age for a year or two.
11 - 2000 Bourgogne 'Roncevie' (Bin end) £9.75 If you fancy a change from claret, or a forage into Burgundy then there is no better example of pinot noir to whet your appetite! Bags of fruit, rich and soft on the palate, just classic red Burgundy ready to drink and enjoy now.
12 - 2004 Chateau Beaumont: Haut Medoc £14.00 Classic drinking claret, smokey cigar box nose, cabernet sauvignon flavour, full bodied but balanced.
13 - 2000 Crozes Hermitage Thalabert: Jaboulet (Bin end) £20.00 This is fabulous!! Smooth, almost silky soft, rich and fruity, drinking very well now but will also keep for a further two to three years.
14 - 1999 Conde de Navasques: Navarra Spain (magnums only) £20.00
magnum
Limited production classic blend of tempranillo and cabernet sauvignon grapes grown in Navarra just east of Rioja and exclusive to Optimist Ltd! Big fat concentrated, rich fruit, incredibly smooth, the wine has great balance and style, plus bottle age - cracking combo! Decant as there can be sediment!
SWEET WINE
15 - 1999 Chateau Haut Bernasse: Monbazillac (50cl bottles) £12.00 mall production, plenty of botrytis evident in this richly coloured Monbazillac; good fruit, soft and full-bodied on the palate - very fine. Ideal with any pud. Drink now.
